After your treatment
- Bite on the gauze for 45 minutes. Do not spit, rinse hard, smoke or use a straw for at least a day, so the clot stays in place.
- Ice on the cheek, 20 minutes on and 20 off, for the first day keeps swelling down.
- From the next day, rinse gently with warm salt water three times a day and eat soft food.
- Call us for bleeding that will not stop with pressure, pain that gets worse after day three, fever, or swelling that keeps increasing.

Questions patients ask
Do all wisdom teeth have to come out?
No. Wisdom teeth that are straight, fully through and easy to clean can stay. Ones that are stuck, decaying or repeatedly infected usually need to come out.
Will a surgical extraction hurt?
The area is numbed fully. You feel pressure, not pain. Some soreness and swelling for a few days afterwards is normal and is managed with medicine.
What is a dry socket?
It is when the blood clot is lost from the socket too early, leaving bone exposed and painful. Following the aftercare steps above is the best prevention. If it happens, we can treat it.
