Dental Onlay (Partial Crown)
An onlay sits between a filling and a crown. It covers and protects the part of a back tooth that is damaged, while keeping the healthy walls of the tooth that a full crown would remove.
What it is
The onlay is made in the lab to fit the prepared tooth exactly, then bonded in place. Because it is made outside the mouth, it is stronger and fits more precisely than a very large filling.
Who it is for
- A large cavity or broken cusp in a molar or premolar
- An old large filling that is cracking
- A tooth where a crown would remove too much healthy structure
How it is done
- Old filling and decay removed; the tooth shaped
- Impression or scan taken; temporary placed
- The onlay is tried, adjusted and bonded
Time: Usually two visits.
Afterwards
- Treat the temporary gently
- Brush and floss normally once the onlay is bonded
What to know before you decide
Onlays need enough healthy tooth around them to bond to. If the damage is extensive, or after some root canals, a full crown may be safer.

Common questions
Onlay or crown?
An onlay keeps more of your tooth when enough healthy structure remains; a crown is better for badly weakened teeth.
Is an onlay tooth-coloured?
It can be made in tooth-coloured material; your dentist will advise.
How long does it last?
Often many years with good care.
