Removing an Old Crown or Bridge

Old crowns and bridges sometimes need to come off: to treat decay underneath, to redo a root canal, or to replace a crown that has chipped, loosened or no longer looks right.

₹1,000per crown or bridge unit removed

What it is

Your dentist cuts a groove in the old crown and gently separates it from the tooth, then checks the tooth underneath. Crown removal is planned together with what comes next, usually a temporary crown and then a new one.

Who it is for

  • Decay or leakage under an old crown
  • A root canal that needs redoing through the crown
  • A chipped, loose or unattractive crown or bridge

How it is done

  1. X-ray to see the tooth under the crown
  2. Local anaesthetic if needed
  3. The crown is sectioned and removed
  4. The tooth is examined and protected with a temporary

Time: Part of the visit at which the tooth is treated.

Afterwards

  • Look after the temporary crown until the new one is fitted

What to know before you decide

Removed crowns usually cannot be reused. Sometimes the tooth underneath is found to be too damaged to keep; your dentist will discuss the options before going further.
