Re-cementing a Loose Crown
If a crown comes off but is undamaged and the tooth underneath is healthy, it can often be cleaned and cemented back in place, quickly and at low cost.
What it is
Your dentist checks the crown and the tooth, removes old cement, makes sure there is no decay underneath, and cements the crown back with fresh cement.
Who it is for
- A crown or bridge that has come loose but is intact
- A crown that comes out with no pain
How it is done
- Examination of the crown and tooth; X-ray if needed
- Old cement cleaned off
- The crown is cemented and the bite checked
Time: One short visit.
Afterwards
- Avoid sticky food for 24 hours
- Keep the crown edge clean with brushing and floss
What to know before you decide
If the crown came off because of decay underneath, or the tooth has broken, re-cementing will not hold; treatment or a new crown may be needed.

Common questions
My crown came off. What should I do?
Keep the crown safe and call us. Avoid chewing on that side.
Can I use shop glue to fix it?
No. It can damage the tooth and the crown.
Will it come off again?
If the tooth and crown are sound, re-cementing usually holds well.
