PFM Crown (Porcelain Fused to Metal) in Pune
A crown is a cap that covers a weakened tooth to protect it and restore its shape. The material you choose decides how it looks, how strong it is and what it costs. We offer four crown materials, from metal to high-esthetic ceramic, and this page explains one of them.
What it is
A PFM crown has a metal inner layer for strength, covered with tooth-coloured porcelain. It has a long track record on both front and back teeth. In short: Strong and tooth-coloured; porcelain can chip; a grey line can show at the gum edge over time; less translucent than all-ceramic.
Who it is for
- Back teeth where you want a tooth colour at a moderate cost
- Bridges that need a strong metal framework
- Patients who prefer a proven, well-known option
How it is done
- Examination and X-ray; a root canal or core first if the tooth needs it
- The tooth is shaped and an impression or scan is taken
- A temporary crown protects the tooth while the lab makes yours
- Shade and fit checked, then the crown is cemented and the bite adjusted
Time: Usually two visits, about a week apart, depending on the lab.
Afterwards
- Avoid sticky or very hard food on the temporary crown
- Brush and floss around the crown like a natural tooth
- A night guard may be advised if you grind your teeth
What to know before you decide
A crown protects the tooth but does not make it decay-proof: the edge where crown meets tooth must be kept clean. Any crown can chip, loosen or need replacing over time, and the right material depends on the tooth, your bite and your budget.

How long does a crown last?
Many crowns last ten years or more with good care; it depends on the material, the tooth and habits such as grinding.
Is a crown needed after every root canal?
Usually for back teeth, to prevent fracture. Your dentist will advise for your tooth.
