Temporary Crown
A temporary crown is a short-term cap placed on a shaped tooth while the dental lab makes your permanent crown. It protects the tooth and keeps your bite and gums in shape in between.
What it is
Temporary crowns are made of acrylic or composite material, shaped in the clinic and fixed with a temporary cement so they can be removed easily later. They are not designed to last more than a few weeks.
Who it is for
- Between crown preparation and fitting the final crown
- After a root canal, to protect the tooth until the crown
- When a bridge is being made
How it is done
- The temporary is shaped on the prepared tooth
- It is fixed with temporary cement
- The bite is checked
Time: Placed at the crown preparation visit.
Afterwards
- Avoid sticky food such as chikki or chewing gum on that side
- Floss by sliding the floss out sideways rather than pulling up
- Call us if it comes off; do not leave the tooth uncovered for long
What to know before you decide
A temporary crown can come loose or wear. It is meant to bridge a short gap, and delaying the final crown for months risks decay or fracture of the tooth underneath.
