I treat patients four days a week and build the software the practice runs on for the rest. Both halves are the same job: removing whatever stands between a dentist and the person in the chair.
I run AR 32 Signature Smiles Executive Poly Dental Care Centre with Dr Rashmi Bamane — 5 clinics across Pune, head office in Kharadi. We see 7 patients a day at 80 minutes each, and that number is the whole practice, not a marketing line.
Implants, full-mouth rehabilitation, endodontics and the cosmetic work that follows. The clinician who plans a case is the clinician who does it — which is only possible because of the 7-a-day limit.
Most of dentistry's bad reputation comes from being rushed. Eighty minutes is long enough to explain what is happening, do it properly, and answer the question the patient was too embarrassed to ask.
Over roughly 8 years I taught myself to write software, because nothing on the market was built by somebody who had to use it on a Tuesday afternoon with a patient waiting.
What came out of that is the records system our 5 clinics run on, and All Right 32 — the same engine, opened up so an independent practice can use it without handing its data to a corporate chain.
Independent practices are being squeezed from two directions. Corporate chains have capital and software; the listing platforms sit between a dentist and their own patients and charge rent on the relationship. A single practice cannot out-spend either.
It can, however, be better equipped. Everything under the AR 32 name exists for that: a records system a solo practice can actually run, a community where dentists compare notes without a platform taking a cut, an academy that teaches the business side nobody taught us, and directories built by the people in them.
I am not fond of first position. I am fond of leaving a legacy in dentistry.
