Tooth-coloured Composite Filling for a Front Tooth
Front teeth are seen every time you smile, so a filling there has to be strong and invisible. A composite restoration rebuilds a chipped, decayed or worn front tooth in a shade matched to yours.
What it is
Composite is a tooth-coloured resin that bonds to the tooth. For a front tooth, your dentist chooses shades to match yours, removes any decay, and builds the tooth up in layers, shaping and polishing it so it blends in. Small chips and gaps can often be repaired without drilling healthy tooth.
Who it is for
- A chipped or broken edge on a front tooth
- Decay or dark spots between front teeth
- An old, discoloured front-tooth filling
- Small gaps between front teeth (where suitable)
How it is done
- Shade selection in daylight before the tooth dries
- Decay removed, often with local anaesthetic
- The tooth is treated so the composite bonds
- Composite built up in layers and hardened with a blue light
- Shaping, bite check and polishing
Time: Usually one visit.
Afterwards
- You can eat once the numbness wears off
- Avoid biting hard objects such as nails, pens or ice with front teeth
- Tea, coffee and tobacco can stain composite over time
What to know before you decide
Composite can chip or stain over the years and may need repolishing or repair. For large breaks or very discoloured teeth, a crown or veneer may last better, and your dentist will say so.
