Tooth-coloured Composite Filling — Class II (between two back teeth)
A Class II filling repairs decay on between two back teeth. It is done in tooth-coloured composite so it looks like your tooth.
What it is
Class II means the decay involves the side of a back tooth where it touches its neighbour. It is harder to see and to clean, and the filling must rebuild the contact so food does not pack between the teeth. Your dentist removes the decay, bonds composite into the cavity in layers and shapes it to your bite. A thin band and wedge are used to rebuild the contact with the next tooth.
Who it is for
- A cavity seen on examination or X-ray
- Food sticking in one place
- Sensitivity to sweets or cold
- An old silver filling that is failing
How it is done
- Local anaesthetic if needed
- Decay removed and the cavity shaped
- Bonding agent applied
- Composite placed in layers and hardened with light
- Bite checked and the filling polished
Time: Usually one visit.
Afterwards
- Eat once the numbness wears off
- Mild sensitivity for a few days can occur
- Floss daily, especially around the new contact
What to know before you decide
If decay has reached close to the nerve, the tooth may stay sensitive or later need a root canal; your dentist will warn you when this is a risk. Very large cavities may be better restored with an onlay or crown.

Common questions
Why not a silver filling?
Composite bonds to the tooth and matches its colour; it usually needs less healthy tooth removed.
Will it hurt after the filling?
Some sensitivity can last a few days. Pain that lingers or wakes you at night should be checked.
How long will it last?
Often many years; it depends on size, bite, diet and cleaning.
