Re-Root Canal Treatment (Re-RCT) in Pune
Most root canals last for many years. Sometimes, though, a treated tooth becomes painful or infected again, months or years later. Re-root canal treatment (retreatment) cleans the tooth again from the inside to save it.
What it is
A root canal can fail when a canal was missed or not fully cleaned, when the crown leaked and bacteria got back in, or when the tooth cracked. In retreatment, the old filling material is removed from the canals, the canals are cleaned and disinfected again, any missed canal is looked for, and the canals are refilled. Retreatment is technically demanding and is usually carried out by an MDS endodontist.
Who it is for
- Pain or swelling around a tooth that already had a root canal
- An infection seen at the root tip on X-ray
- A crown that leaked for a long time, exposing the root filling
How it is done
- X-ray, and sometimes a CBCT scan, to see the old treatment
- The crown or filling is opened
- Old root filling removed; canals cleaned and disinfected
- Canals refilled and the tooth sealed
- A new crown is usually needed to protect the tooth
Time: Usually two or more visits.
Afterwards
- Some tenderness on biting for a few days is common
- Avoid chewing hard food on the tooth until the crown is placed
- Keep the follow-up appointments
What to know before you decide
Retreatment has a lower success rate than a first root canal, and some teeth have cracks or too little structure left to save. In that case, your dentist will discuss extraction and replacement with an implant or bridge, and the costs of each.
Fee and booking
Our current published fee is ₹10,000 per tooth for root canal retreatment. The final cost is confirmed after examination, and you receive a written plan with every option priced before anything is started. Common questions
Why did my root canal fail?
Common reasons are a missed or uncleaned canal, a leaking crown, or a crack. The X-ray often shows which.
Is retreatment better than an implant?
If the tooth can be saved predictably, keeping your own tooth is usually preferred. If not, an implant may be the better choice.
How much does it cost?
