RVG Digital Dental X-ray (IOPA)
An RVG (radiovisiography) X-ray is a small digital picture of one or two teeth, their roots and the bone around them. It shows what the eye cannot: decay between teeth, infection at the root tip, and how far a problem has gone.
What it is
A small sensor is placed inside your mouth and a low-dose X-ray is taken. The image appears on screen in seconds, so your dentist can show you exactly what they see. Digital sensors need much less radiation than old film X-rays. For larger questions, such as the position of a wisdom tooth near the nerve or bone for an implant, an OPG or CBCT scan may be advised instead; we will tell you where it is done and what it costs.
Who it is for
- Pain where the cause is not visible
- Before and during a root canal, to measure and check the canals
- Checking a wisdom tooth, an old crown or a filling
- Before an extraction
How it is done
- A sensor in a soft cover is placed against the tooth
- You hold still for a second while the image is taken
- The image appears on screen and is explained to you
- The image is saved in your file and patient portal
Time: A few minutes.
Afterwards
- No after-care is needed
- Tell us if you are pregnant or might be, before the X-ray
What to know before you decide
One RVG image shows a small area in two dimensions. It cannot show the whole jaw or depth, which is why a wider scan is sometimes advised.
