Ultrasonic Teeth Cleaning — Grade II (moderate deposits)
We grade scaling by how much tartar (hardened plaque) and stain there is, because a mouth with moderate deposits needs a different amount of work from one with very little. Grade II is for moderate deposits.
What it is
An ultrasonic scaler vibrates and sprays water to break tartar off the tooth surface and from just under the gum. The teeth are then polished so plaque has less to stick to. The grade is decided at the examination, not in advance, and your dentist will show you why. Moderate deposits may need more time, and gums that are inflamed may be cleaned in more than one sitting.
Who it is for
- Tartar on several teeth, above and slightly below the gum line
- Gums that bleed easily and look swollen
- Moderate tea, coffee or tobacco staining
How it is done
- Examination of gums and tartar; gum pocket measurement if needed
- Ultrasonic scaling above and below the gum line
- Polishing
- Brushing and flossing advice for your mouth
Time: One or two sittings.
Afterwards
- Some sensitivity for a few days is common and settles
- Gums may bleed a little for a day or two
- Avoid very hot, cold or staining food for a day
- Brush twice and clean between teeth daily
What to know before you decide
Scaling removes deposits; it does not reverse bone loss already caused by gum disease. If pockets are deep, deeper gum cleaning or gum surgery may be advised.

Common questions
Does scaling damage enamel or loosen teeth?
No. It removes tartar. Teeth can feel loose or gappy afterwards only because tartar was filling the spaces or holding inflamed gums.
How often should I get scaling?
Most people every six to twelve months; people with gum disease more often, as advised.
Why is my cleaning Grade II?
The grade depends on how much tartar and stain your dentist finds at the examination, and it will be explained before cleaning starts.
