Permanent (Bonded) Retainer after Braces
Teeth tend to drift back after braces. A permanent retainer is a thin wire bonded behind the front teeth that holds them in their new position, without you having to remember to wear anything.
What it is
The wire is shaped to the back of your front teeth and bonded with tooth-coloured material. It is not visible from the front.
Who it is for
- At the end of braces or aligner treatment
- When front teeth have a strong tendency to relapse
- Patients who would forget a removable retainer
How it is done
- Teeth cleaned and prepared
- The wire is bonded behind the front teeth
- The bite is checked
Time: One visit.
Afterwards
- Clean around the wire carefully; a floss threader helps
- Avoid biting hard food directly with the front teeth
- Come in promptly if the wire comes loose
What to know before you decide
Plaque and tartar collect more easily around the wire, and the bond can break. A loose retainer stops working, so regular check-ups matter.
