Wisdom Tooth Extraction — Moderate
Wisdom teeth are graded by how they sit in the jaw, because that decides how they are removed and how recovery goes. "Moderate" is one of six grades we use, from Easy to Nerve Proximity. The grade is set after the examination and X-ray, never from the outside alone.
What it is
The tooth is partly under the gum or partly covered by bone, or tilted towards the tooth in front. A small gum opening and dividing the tooth are often needed. Your dentist shows you the X-ray, explains why your tooth falls in this grade, and gives you the fee before anything starts.
Who it is for
- A partly erupted tooth with repeated gum infection (pericoronitis)
- A tooth tilted against the molar in front
- A tooth that has stopped coming through
How it is done
- Examination and X-ray; a CBCT scan only if the nerve or sinus needs a closer look
- Medical history and medicines reviewed
- Local anaesthetic
- Removal, usually with a small gum opening and the tooth divided
- Stitches if needed, gauze, and written aftercare
Time: One visit, plus a review.
Afterwards
- Bite on gauze; no spitting, straws or smoking for at least 24 hours
- Cold packs on the first day, then warm salt-water rinses as advised
- Soft food for a few days
- Swelling usually peaks on day two or three and then settles
What to know before you decide
Swelling, stiffness of the jaw and some bruising are common after harder extractions. Less common risks include dry socket, infection and, for lower teeth near the nerve, temporary or rarely lasting numbness of the lip or tongue. Your risk is explained for your own X-ray before you consent.

Common questions
Does every wisdom tooth need to come out?
No. A healthy, well-positioned wisdom tooth that you can clean can stay. Removal is advised for pain, infection, decay, damage to the tooth in front, or cysts.
Why does the fee depend on the grade?
Harder positions take longer, need more skill and sometimes a specialist surgeon, so the grade decides the fee.
Can both sides be done together?
Sometimes. Your surgeon will advise based on difficulty and your recovery.
