Do I need an appointment or can I just walk in ?

By Dr Avinash Bamane (A-18814) · Last reviewed 6 September 2026 · 726 words

The short answer

To receive guaranteed, unhurried treatment, you must book an appointment. Quality dentistry requires strict sterilization and dedicated time that cannot be rushed. We do accept walk-ins for severe dental emergencies—like sudden trauma or unbearable pain—but you may experience a waiting period while we stabilize scheduled patients first.

In an era of instant gratification and fast-food-style service, many patients wonder why they cannot simply walk into a dental clinic and immediately sit in the chair. The reality is that high-quality, ethical dentistry operates on a completely different operational timeline than a retail store or a general physician's consultation.

The Time-Cost of Clinical Excellence

A proper dental procedure is micro-surgery. Whether it is a meticulous composite filling, a complex root canal, or an intricate crown preparation, these procedures demand absolute focus and specific time blocks. We do not rush our work to meet volume quotas. When you book an appointment, you are not just reserving a chair; you are reserving the undivided attention of the doctor, the specialized equipment required for your specific procedure, and the guarantee that your treatment will not be compromised by time constraints.

The Invisible Bottleneck: Sterilization

One of the primary reasons we operate strictly on appointments is the invisible barrier of infection control. Between every single patient, the operatory must undergo a rigorous, multi-step sterilization protocol. Dental chairs are disinfected with hospital-grade virucides, disposable barriers are replaced, and the microscopic handpieces undergo strict autoclave sterilization. This non-negotiable process takes time. If a clinic immediately waves every walk-in patient straight into the chair without a waiting period, they are almost certainly cutting dangerous corners on cross-contamination protocols.

How We Handle Dental Emergencies

While routine cleanings and aesthetic consultations require prior booking, we understand that biological emergencies do not check the calendar. If you experience sudden dental trauma (such as a knocked-out tooth), massive facial swelling, or unbearable, throbbing nerve pain that keeps you awake, you absolutely can walk in.

However, emergency walk-ins operate on a medical triage system:

  • Assessment First: We will evaluate your condition immediately to ensure you are safe and to stabilize the acute pain.
  • The Waiting Period: You will likely need to wait in the lounge while we find a safe stopping point with our currently scheduled patient.
  • Palliative Care: The goal of an emergency walk-in is to eliminate the pain and infection today. The final, permanent restoration (like the completion of a root canal) will usually be scheduled for a dedicated appointment later that week.

When this does not work

Walk-in systems fail when patients expect comprehensive, definitive treatments—like a full set of aesthetic crowns or multiple surgical extractions—on a whim. Expecting a clinician to squeeze a highly complex, two-hour procedure between scheduled appointments guarantees compromised work and throws the entire clinic schedule into chaos, forcing every other scheduled patient to wait.

What can go wrong

The biggest complication of relying on walk-ins is the risk of being turned away. If our schedule is fully booked with complex surgeries, or if Dr. Rashmi and I are in the middle of a sterile implant procedure that cannot be interrupted, a non-emergency walk-in will be asked to schedule for another day, wasting their travel time and causing unnecessary frustration.

How it should be done properly

A high-standard clinic respects your time exactly as much as its own. When you book an appointment, you should be seated within ten to fifteen minutes of your scheduled time. The treatment plan should be executed calmly, with the doctor entirely focused on your mouth, not glancing at the clock or rushing to clear a crowded waiting room of unscheduled walk-ins.

What we do about it

The ultimate solution for patients with unpredictable schedules is utilizing our digital booking portal. Instead of taking a chance on a walk-in, you can view our live schedule and claim a last-minute cancellation slot directly from your phone, guaranteeing your time in the chair before you even leave your house for the clinic.

Mistakes to avoid

A classic mistake patients make is ignoring a mild toothache for weeks, only to finally walk in unannounced on a busy Saturday evening when the pain becomes unbearable. By waiting for an emergency instead of booking a routine appointment early, they force themselves into a high-stress situation, often resulting in an extraction that could have been a simple, scheduled filling months prior.

Our honest opinionOpinion

Opinion: At AR 32, our entire philosophy is built against the "dental mill" concept where patients are treated like numbers on an assembly line. When you sit in my chair, I want to be 100% focused on saving your teeth, not worrying about a lobby full of walk-ins staring at the receptionist. Appointments allow us to practice dentistry the way it was meant to be practiced: with precision, patience, and absolute, uncompromising safety.

This answers a general question. It is not a diagnosis, and it cannot account for what is actually happening in your mouth. If something hurts, get it looked at — by us or by anyone.
