can a wisdom tooth cause pain in other teeth

By Dr Pradip Thorat (MDS, Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery) · Last reviewed 23 October 2026 · 543 words

The short answer

Yes. A wisdom tooth can cause pain that you feel in the molar in front, in the ear, the jaw joint, the throat or even the upper teeth. Sometimes the pain is referred, meaning nerves share signals; sometimes the wisdom tooth has actually damaged the tooth in front, causing decay or bone loss there. An X-ray usually shows which it is.

Many patients come in pointing at the wrong tooth, and that is not their fault. Dental pain is notoriously hard to place, and pain from the back of the mouth is the hardest of all. A wisdom tooth can make other teeth hurt in two quite different ways, and the difference matters for treatment.

Way one: referred pain

The teeth, jaw and ear on one side share branches of the same large nerve, the trigeminal nerve. When one area is inflamed, the brain is not always precise about where the signal comes from. So pain from an inflamed lower wisdom tooth may be felt in:

  • the second or first molar in front of it,
  • the ear, often mistaken for an ear infection,
  • the jaw joint just in front of the ear,
  • the throat, on one side, especially when swallowing,
  • occasionally the upper back teeth on the same side.

In this case the other teeth are healthy; they just "borrow" the pain.

Way two: real damage to the tooth in front

A wisdom tooth tilted forward presses against the back of the second molar. The gap between them traps food that no brush or floss can reach. Over months, this can cause:

  • Decay on the back of the second molar, often near the gum line, where it is hard to see and hard to repair. If it reaches the pulp (the nerve and blood supply inside the tooth), that molar may need a root canal.
  • Bone loss and gum pockets between the two teeth, which may cause tenderness and food packing.
  • Root resorption, rarely, where pressure from a horizontal wisdom tooth wears away part of the neighbouring root.

This kind of pain is not borrowed: the second molar genuinely needs treatment, and protecting it is often the main reason to remove the wisdom tooth.

What about crowding of the front teeth?

People often blame wisdom teeth for front teeth that shift or ache. Current evidence suggests wisdom teeth play at most a small role in front-teeth crowding. Pain in the front teeth is much more likely to come from decay, grinding or gum problems of their own.

Clues that the wisdom tooth is the source

  • Swollen, tender gum right at the back, behind the last molar.
  • Bad taste or smell from that area.
  • Pain that worsens when you bite on the back teeth or open wide.
  • Stiffness in opening the mouth.
  • A flare-up linked to a cold, stress, exams or late nights.

How your dentist sorts it out

Your dentist examines all the teeth on the painful side, taps and tests the suspected ones, and takes a digital X-ray (RVG) to see the wisdom tooth, the second molar and the bone between them. Sometimes a wider view such as an OPG may be advised, and we will tell you where it is done. Only when the source is clear does treatment make sense; removing a healthy tooth for borrowed pain helps nobody. You can also try our dental pain finder before your visit.

If the wisdom tooth is the culprit, removal is usually planned with our oral and maxillofacial surgery department, and any damage to the tooth in front is repaired separately. More on our page about wisdom tooth problems.

This answers a general question. It is not a diagnosis, and it cannot account for what is actually happening in your mouth. If something hurts, get it looked at — by us or by anyone.
