Probably not by much. Current evidence suggests wisdom teeth play only a small role, if any, in crowding of the lower front teeth, which happens naturally with age in most people, whether or not they have wisdom teeth. Removing healthy wisdom teeth just to prevent crowding is not usually recommended. A retainer is the reliable way to stop teeth shifting after braces.
"My wisdom teeth are pushing my front teeth" is one of the most common things we hear, especially from people in their twenties who notice their lower front teeth starting to overlap. It feels logical: a tooth erupting at the back must push the others forward. The evidence tells a more nuanced story.
Studies comparing people with and without wisdom teeth have found that lower front-teeth crowding develops in both groups. The effect of wisdom teeth, if any, appears small. Most dental and orthodontic authorities today do not recommend removing healthy wisdom teeth solely to prevent crowding.
Wisdom teeth are not irrelevant to orthodontic planning. An orthodontist may advise removing them in some situations, for example:
These are decisions made for a specific treatment plan, not a general rule. Planning for braces is done with our orthodontics department.
The most likely cause is not wearing your retainer as advised. A retainer, removable or fixed behind the front teeth, holds the teeth in place. Our current published fee for a permanent retainer is ₹5,000, confirmed after examination; see our online store. Minor relapse caught early is often easy to correct; ignored for years, it may need treatment again.
Crowding is not the main reason, but removal is often sensible for other reasons: repeated gum infection (pericoronitis), decay that cannot be repaired, damage to the second molar, or a cyst. If your wisdom teeth are giving you any of these, removal is planned with our oral and maxillofacial surgery department.
Have your teeth checked. Your dentist will look at your bite and gum health, take X-rays to see where the wisdom teeth are, and explain whether the crowding is worth treating, whether simple monitoring is fine, and whether braces or aligners make sense. Mild crowding that does not trap food or bother you often needs no treatment at all. More on our page about crowded teeth.
