The short answer

Every dentist practising in India, our MDS panel included, must be registered with a State Dental Council, and you are welcome to ask us for your specialist's registration number before any treatment begins. Our founding dentists' numbers are published: Dr Avinash Bamane A-18814 and Dr Rashmi Bamane A-22726, Maharashtra State Dental Council.

Checking a dentist's registration takes a few minutes, and it is one of the most useful things you can do before agreeing to surgery or any expensive treatment. We encourage it.

Why registration matters

In India, a dental degree on its own doesn't give anyone the right to practise. A dentist has to be registered with a State Dental Council, which keeps the register of who may practise and deals with complaints about professional conduct. Registration is what makes a dentist answerable to a regulator. A specialist with an MDS (Master of Dental Surgery) is still a registered dentist first; the MDS is an additional qualification on top of the basic BDS degree.

How to check your specialist

  1. Ask us for the details. Before your specialist consultation or treatment, ask for the specialist's full name, MDS speciality and State Dental Council registration number. We don't print panel registration numbers on the website, but you can ask for them, and you should get a straight answer.
  2. Match the speciality to the treatment. An MDS in orthodontics is the right person for braces; an MDS in oral and maxillofacial surgery for an impacted wisdom tooth near a nerve; an MDS in endodontics for a root canal that has failed before. If the department doesn't match the treatment, ask why.
  3. Look it up. Once you have the number, you can check it against the council's register yourself.
  4. Keep a note. Write the specialist's name and number down with your own records, alongside the clinical notes and X-rays you can view in our patient portal.

Our founding dentists

Dr Avinash Bamane (BDS) is registered under number A-18814 and Dr Rashmi Bamane (BDS) under number A-22726 with the Maharashtra State Dental Council. These numbers are published on our website, and you can verify them on the council's register. One of them sees you first and decides when a specialist is needed.

What registration doesn't tell you

A registration number confirms that a dentist is allowed to practise. It doesn't tell you how often they do your particular procedure, or how they handle complications. Those are questions to ask at the consultation itself: how often they do this treatment, what the usual problems afterwards are, and what happens if one occurs. A specialist who answers calmly and specifically is usually a better sign than any certificate on the wall.

Red flags at any clinic

  • A clinic that avoids naming who will actually do your procedure.
  • A "specialist" who can't tell you which MDS speciality they hold.
  • Reluctance to share a registration number when asked politely.
  • Pressure to agree to surgery the same day, before the plan has been explained and you have had time to think.

None of these proves wrongdoing, but each is a good reason to slow down and ask more questions. You can read what each department does on our MDS departments page, and how your first visit works in our first appointment guide.

This answers a general question. It is not a diagnosis, and it cannot account for what is actually happening in your mouth. If something hurts, get it looked at — by us or by anyone.
