are implants better than dentures

The short answer

Implants usually chew better, feel more like natural teeth and help preserve the jawbone, but they are not automatically the better choice. They need surgery, months of healing, enough healthy bone and a larger budget. A well-made denture is quicker, cheaper and reversible, and for some people, especially those with poor general health, it is the more sensible option.

This is one of the most common questions we hear, and the honest answer is that it depends on your mouth, your health, your budget and what bothers you most. Implants have real advantages, but a good denture remains a perfectly reasonable choice for many people.

Where implants are stronger

  • Chewing: an implant is fixed in the bone, so you can bite harder and with more confidence. Dentures rest on the gums and move a little, which limits tough foods.
  • Bone: once teeth are lost, the jawbone slowly shrinks. Implants put load into the bone and help slow this down. Dentures do not, and they can speed it up if they fit poorly.
  • Nothing to remove: single implants and fixed implant bridges stay in. There is no plate over the palate, so taste and temperature feel more natural.
  • Neighbouring teeth: an implant does not lean on other teeth, whereas a partial denture clasps onto them.

Where dentures are stronger

  • No surgery: important for people with uncontrolled diabetes, recent heart problems, some bone medicines or other conditions that make surgery riskier.
  • Time: a denture can be ready in a few weeks. Implants usually need some months for the bone to bond to the implant before the final teeth are fitted.
  • Cost: when many teeth are missing, a single denture replaces them all for far less than an implant for each tooth.
  • Reversible and adjustable: a denture can be relined, repaired or remade. An implant that fails leaves a gap in the bone to deal with.

Costs at our clinic

Our current published fee is ₹80,000 per dental implant, covering the implant, abutment and crown, while dentures start from ₹40,000 for a flexible partial denture and ₹80,000 for a complete denture. See our online store for the list. Final costs are confirmed after examination, and implant planning may need a CBCT scan, which may be advised; we will tell you where it is done and what it costs.

The middle path

For people who find a lower denture loose, two implants can be placed to anchor it. The denture still comes out for cleaning but snaps firmly into place. This often gives much of the benefit of implants at a lower cost than a fixed bridge. Read more in our answer on implant-supported dentures in the dentures questions hub.

A quick decision checklist

  • Is your general health stable and are you a non-smoker, or willing to stop around surgery? If not, a denture may be safer.
  • How many teeth are missing? One or two gaps with healthy neighbours often suit implants. A whole jaw may suit a denture or an implant-supported denture.
  • What bothers you most: looseness, appearance, chewing, or cost?
  • Can you commit to cleaning and regular reviews? Implants can lose bone through gum infection if hygiene slips.
  • What is your timeline? A wedding next month is a denture timeline, not an implant one.

This answers a general question. It is not a diagnosis, and it cannot account for what is actually happening in your mouth. If something hurts, get it looked at — by us or by anyone.
