am i too old for a dental implant

By Dr Rohan Kale (MDS, Periodontics) · Last reviewed 23 October 2026 · 511 words

The short answer

There is no upper age limit for dental implants. People in their seventies and eighties have implants placed; what matters is your general health, bone, medicines and ability to keep the implant clean, not your birth year. A full medical history and, where needed, a word with your physician usually settles whether an implant is sensible for you.

Many older patients assume implants are for younger people and quietly put up with a loose denture or a gap. Age by itself is not a reason to say no. Bone in a healthy older person still heals around an implant, more slowly perhaps, but reliably. The real question is whether your overall health and circumstances make surgery and the years of care afterwards worthwhile.

What matters more than age

  • General health: heart conditions, blood pressure and thyroid problems should be stable and controlled. Recent heart attack or stroke usually means waiting.
  • Diabetes: fine if well controlled; risky if not.
  • Medicines: blood thinners may need planning with your physician, never stopping on your own. Certain bone-strengthening medicines for osteoporosis, especially injections or long-term tablets called bisphosphonates, can affect jaw healing. Always mention them.
  • Cancer treatment: past radiotherapy to the head and neck needs special caution.
  • Bone quantity: after years without teeth or wearing a denture, the jaw often shrinks. This can usually be measured with imaging and sometimes needs grafting or shorter implants.
  • Hand movement and eyesight: you or a family member must be able to clean around the implant every day.

Why implants often suit older patients

The commonest complaint we hear from older patients is a lower denture that floats, rubs and makes eating painful. Two implants in the lower jaw with a denture that clips onto them can transform that, letting you chew chapati and vegetables with confidence. It is a smaller procedure than replacing every tooth with implants, and often the most practical choice. You can read about denture options on our denture page.

For a single missing tooth, an implant also avoids cutting down healthy neighbouring teeth for a bridge, which matters if those teeth have to last another twenty years.

When it may not be the wise choice

Sometimes the honest advice is not to have an implant. That includes uncontrolled medical conditions, very frail health where surgery is a real strain, situations where daily cleaning cannot be managed, or where a well-made denture or bridge would do the job with far less treatment. A good dentist will tell you so rather than push surgery.

What about being too young?

The opposite limit exists. Implants do not grow with the jaw, so they are usually delayed until jaw growth has finished, typically in the late teens for girls and a little later for boys. A teenager who loses a front tooth in a sports or two-wheeler accident usually gets a temporary replacement until then.

Preparing for the consultation

  • Bring a list of every medicine you take, including tablets for blood pressure, sugar, thyroid, blood thinning and bone strength.
  • Bring recent blood reports if you have them, especially sugar.
  • Bring a family member, both for company and to help remember the plan.
  • Ask about all the options, including the simpler ones.

Implant cases with complex dentures or many missing teeth are often planned with a prosthodontist (a specialist in replacing teeth); see our prosthodontics department. Related questions are in our dental implants Q&A.

This answers a general question. It is not a diagnosis, and it cannot account for what is actually happening in your mouth. If something hurts, get it looked at — by us or by anyone.
