what is dentine

Dentine is the hard, yellowish tissue that makes up the vast majority of a tooth's volume, located directly beneath the protective enamel. It acts as a slightly flexible, biological shock absorber that prevents your brittle enamel from shattering. It contains millions of microscopic channels, which is why exposed dentine causes tooth sensitivity.

While enamel usually gets all the attention for being the hardest substance in the human body, dentine is the true workhorse of your smile. Dentine is a hard, yellowish, calcified tissue that makes up the vast bulk of your tooth's volume. Lying just beneath the outer enamel and surrounding the living, sensitive dental pulp, dentine provides the essential structural foundation for your entire bite.

The Biological Shock Absorber

If your teeth were made entirely of enamel, they would shatter like glass under normal biting forces. Enamel is incredibly hard, but it is also extremely brittle. Dentine solves this structural problem by being less mineralized and slightly flexible. It acts as a biological shock absorber, taking the immense mechanical pressure of your chewing and distributing it safely to support the enamel.

A Unique, Porous Composition

From a compositional standpoint, dentine strikes a perfect balance. By volume, it consists of roughly 45% mineral hydroxyapatite, 33% organic material, and 22% water. This precise biological mixture gives it a hardness of approximately 3 on the Mohs scale, making it significantly softer than enamel once it is exposed to bacteria.

The Source of Tooth Sensitivity

Have you ever felt a sharp "zing" of pain when eating ice cream or drinking hot coffee? That is your dentine functioning as a sensory warning system. Unlike solid enamel, dentine is highly porous and is packed with microscopic channels called dentinal tubules.

  • The Communication Highway: These millions of microscopic tubules radiate outward from the inner pulp chamber to the enamel border.
  • Exposed Nerves: When your gums recede or your enamel thins out, these channels become exposed.
  • Instant Pain: Once exposed, external stimuli like hot and cold temperatures travel directly down these tubules, triggering the nerve endings to alert you to potential damage.

Why Dentine Dictates Your Tooth Color

Many patients are surprised to learn that enamel is actually translucent. The actual color of your tooth comes from the dentine underneath it. Because dentine is naturally yellowish, it greatly affects the overall color of your smile. As we age, our enamel can thin while secondary dentine continues to form, which is why teeth often appear more yellow over time.

A Living, Reactive Tissue

Unlike enamel, which cannot regenerate once it is lost, dentine forms throughout your entire life. Specialized cells called odontoblasts reside at the border of the dentine and the pulp. In a fascinating display of resilience, your body can produce a specific type called tertiary dentine (or reparative dentine) in response to stimuli like decay. This helps slow the progress of acidic attacks on the tooth, acting as a final protective barrier for your sensitive pulp.

Enamel is the hard, visible outer layer of your teeth and the most highly mineralized substance in the human body. It acts as a protective shield for the sensitive dentine underneath. Because it contains no living cells, enamel cannot naturally repair itself once it is worn away or destroyed by acid.

Enamel is the smooth, visible outer layer of your tooth crown. It is famous in anatomy for being the hardest and most highly mineralized substance in the human body, surpassing even bone. Its primary job is to act as a resilient shield, protecting the sensitive, living tissues inside your tooth from the physical forces of chewing and the chemical attacks of the food you eat.

The Ultimate Mineral Shield

Enamel owes its incredible strength to its composition. It is made up of approximately 96% densely packed inorganic minerals, primarily a crystalline calcium phosphate called hydroxyapatite. The remaining 4% consists of water and organic proteins. This dense crystalline structure is what allows you to effortlessly bite into hard foods without shattering your teeth.

Translucency and Tooth Color

While we often think of enamel as pure white, it is actually semi-translucent. It allows light to pass through it, meaning the overall color of your smile is heavily influenced by the yellowish dentine layer sitting directly beneath it. As enamel naturally wears thinner with age or acidic erosion, the yellow dentine shows through more clearly, which is why teeth appear darker as we get older.

The One Major Flaw: No Regeneration

Despite its incredible hardness, enamel has one critical biological limitation: it contains no living cells. Unlike your bones, which can heal and knit back together after a fracture, enamel cannot regenerate. Once enamel is dissolved by bacterial acid (causing a cavity), chemically eroded, or chipped from trauma, the structural loss is permanent. Your body cannot grow back new enamel, making daily protective hygiene absolutely vital.
