What you see & feel
You notice the biting edges of your front teeth are becoming completely flat, abnormally short, and possibly chipped or translucent. Your back molars might lose their natural bumps (cusps) and look like flat tables. You may experience increasing sensitivity to hot and cold, and your jaw muscles might feel tired or sore in the morning.
Why it happens
Attrition is the severe mechanical wear of teeth against other teeth (tooth-to-tooth contact). It is most commonly driven by severe bruxism (unconscious clenching and grinding during sleep), an unbalanced bite where specific teeth take too much force, or simply decades of heavy, unprotected chewing forces.
Clinical Advice
- Do not ignore flattening teeth. Once the ultra-hard outer enamel is worn through, the softer underlying layer (dentin) is exposed. Dentin wears away exponentially faster, accelerating the destruction.
- As teeth get shorter, the lower jaw over-closes, leading to severe loss of facial height (making you look prematurely aged) and complex jaw joint (TMJ) damage.
