Primary dental caries (cavity) clinical representation

Symptom Breakdown

What you feel Initially, you may feel nothing at all. As it progresses, you might notice white/brown spots, a visible hole (pit), or sharp sensitivity when eating sweet, hot, or cold foods. Occasional, localized dull aching is a sign of deeper penetration.
Why it happens Bacteria in the biofilm (plaque) ferment dietary sugars and carbohydrates, producing acid as a byproduct. This acid demineralizes the tooth enamel, eventually creating a structural void (cavity) on a previously healthy tooth surface.
Clinical Advice
  • Do not wait for pain. By the time a cavity is painful, it is often already quite deep.
  • Use fluoride-based toothpaste to help remineralize early-stage lesions.
  • Interdental cleaning (flossing) is the only way to effectively prevent cavities between teeth.
Treatment Note Minimally invasive composite resin restorations (fillings) for small-to-moderate cavities, or crowns/onlays for larger structural destruction.

Restore Before It Spreads

A cavity is a progressive disease; it will never heal itself and will continue to grow until the nerve is infected. By catching primary caries early, we can perform a simple, painless filling that saves the healthy tooth structure and avoids more expensive procedures like root canals later.
