Symptom Breakdown

What you feel A sharp or dull aching pain right in front of your ears that often radiates down your neck or into your temples. You might hear loud clicking, popping, or grating sounds when you eat or yawn. In severe cases, your jaw may temporarily lock open or shut (lockjaw), making it terrifyingly difficult to move.
Why it happens The Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ) acts like a sliding hinge connecting your jawbone to your skull. TMJ disorders (TMD) occur when the shock-absorbing cartilaginous disc slips out of place, or when the joint becomes inflamed due to chronic teeth grinding, arthritis, facial trauma, or an uneven bite that strains the chewing muscles.
Clinical Advice
  • Rest the joint immediately. Switch to a soft-food diet, avoid chewing gum entirely, and consciously support your lower jaw when you feel a yawn coming.
  • Apply moist heat (a warm, damp towel) to the sides of your face for 15 minutes to relax severe muscle spasms, followed by ice if the joint feels hot and inflamed.
  • Do not force your mouth open if it feels locked; this can cause permanent damage to the displaced disc.
Treatment Note Custom TMJ orthotic splints to decompress the joint, targeted muscle relaxants, occlusal adjustment to balance your bite, or therapeutic Botox to paralyze spasming jaw muscles.

Relieve Tension and Restore Joint Mobility

Chronic TMJ pain is incredibly debilitating and is frequently misdiagnosed as chronic earaches or severe migraines. By conducting a thorough clinical analysis of how your teeth come together and how your jaw hinges, we can identify the mechanical root of the problem. Using custom-fabricated joint-stabilization splints, we can take the pressure off the inflamed TMJ disc, allowing it to heal and stopping the painful clicking and locking.
