Gap between front teeth diastema clinical representation

Symptom Breakdown

What you feel A highly visible space between two or more teeth, most commonly occurring between the upper front two teeth (midline diastema). You may find that fibrous foods constantly get wedged in the gap, causing localized gum pain, or you might notice a slight lisp or whistle when pronouncing certain words.
Why it happens Gaps are often purely genetic—occurring when there is a mismatch between the size of the jawbone and the size of the teeth. Another frequent cause is an oversized labial frenum (the strip of tissue connecting your inner lip to your gums), which physically blocks the front teeth from coming together.
Clinical Advice
  • Never use "DIY gap bands" or regular rubber bands to pull your teeth together. This extremely dangerous internet trend restricts blood flow to the tooth roots, rapidly destroying the bone and causing the teeth to fall out completely.
  • Ensure you floss the gap carefully; open spaces leave the delicate interdental gums exposed to direct trauma from hard foods.
Treatment Note Instant closure using direct composite resin bonding (veneers), clear aligner therapy/braces to physically move the roots, or a minor frenectomy to release restrictive tissue.
