What you feel
You discover a smooth, firm, raised bump on the inside of your cheek, lips, or the side of your tongue. It is usually the exact same color as your surrounding gums and is completely painless. However, because it sticks out, you likely find yourself accidentally biting it while chewing, causing it to swell or bleed.
Why it happens
An oral fibroma is a benign (non-cancerous) tumor made of dense connective scar tissue. It is your body's localized response to chronic, repetitive trauma. It almost always occurs in an area where you habitually bite your cheek, or where the soft tissue is constantly rubbing against a sharp broken tooth, rough filling, or ill-fitting denture.
Clinical Advice
- Do not ignore any new growth in your mouth. While fibromas are harmless, they look visually identical to certain types of oral cancer. Only a clinical biopsy can confirm the diagnosis.
- A fibroma will never disappear or shrink on its own, and the more you accidentally bite it, the larger the scar tissue will grow.
