Symptom Breakdown

What you see & feel A single tooth has noticeably changed color, turning dark gray, dark yellow, or even black compared to the surrounding white teeth. Strangely, the tooth no longer feels hot or cold temperatures at all. It may occasionally feel tender when you bite down, or there may be a small pimple (fistula) on the gum above it.
Why it happens The dark discoloration is essentially a bruise *inside* the tooth. When a tooth suffers blunt trauma (like being hit by a ball) or deep decay, the blood supply to the inner pulp is severed. As the red blood cells die and break down, iron pigments leak into the microscopic tubules of the surrounding dentin, permanently staining the tooth from the inside out.
Clinical Advice
  • Do not try to fix this with over-the-counter whitening strips. Surface bleaches cannot penetrate the enamel to reach the internal dead tissue. They will only whiten the surrounding teeth, making the dead tooth look even darker by contrast.
  • Even if the tooth does not hurt, the dead tissue inside is highly toxic and will inevitably form a bone-destroying abscess.
Treatment Note Endodontic therapy (Root Canal) to safely remove the necrotic tissue, followed by 'Walking Bleach' (Internal Bleaching) or a Porcelain Crown to restore the natural color.

Clear the Infection, Restore the Color

A dark, discolored tooth is a glaring aesthetic issue, but the hidden infection is the true clinical priority. Our endodontic team first accesses the hollow chamber of the tooth to meticulously clean out the dead, necrotic tissue and seal the root system. Once the tooth is medically stable, we address the aesthetics. By placing a specialized bleaching agent directly *inside* the tooth, we can reverse the dark staining from within, bringing the tooth back to its natural, vibrant shade before sealing it permanently.
