What you see & feel
You discover a smooth, fluid-filled bump or swelling on the gums, typically near the root of a tooth that previously had a deep filling, root canal, or trauma. It is often entirely painless. In many cases, patients are completely unaware it exists until it is incidentally discovered on a routine dental X-ray.
Why it happens
While there are many types of oral cysts, the vast majority are Radicular (Apical) Cysts. These form as a defensive mechanism. When the nerve inside a tooth dies (necrosis), bacterial toxins leak out the tip of the root into the jawbone. The body attempts to wall off this infection by forming a fluid-filled membranous sac around it. As the cyst expands, it hollows out the surrounding bone.
Clinical Advice
- Never attempt to pop or drain a cyst with a needle at home. A dental cyst is rooted deep within the jawbone, not just on the surface tissue. Puncturing it will only cause a severe secondary infection.
- Because they grow silently and destroy bone, they can eventually weaken the jaw enough to cause a spontaneous fracture or shift adjacent teeth out of alignment.
