What you observe
A visible split or opening in the upper lip that may extend up into the nose, and/or a physical opening in the roof of the mouth (the hard or soft palate). Infants often struggle with feeding (formula entering the nasal cavity) and as the child grows, they face severe dental crowding, missing teeth, and speech impediments.
Why it happens
Clefts are congenital conditions occurring during early fetal development (weeks 4 through 9 of pregnancy). The facial tissues and bones that normally grow from opposite sides of the head to meet and fuse in the middle fail to join completely. This structural void prevents the upper jaw (maxilla) and teeth from developing along a normal, continuous arch.

- Dental care must begin before the first teeth erupt. Managing a cleft palate requires a highly coordinated timeline involving surgeons, speech therapists, and orthodontists.
- Children with clefts are highly susceptible to severe tooth decay because the malformed enamel is harder to clean. Rigorous preventive care (fluoride, sealants) is non-negotiable.
