Symptom Breakdown

What you see & feel You notice hard, crusty, yellow, brown, or black deposits accumulating near the gum line, most commonly on the back side of your lower front teeth. Your tongue feels a rough, chalky texture against the teeth. You may also experience chronic bad breath, and your gums bleed easily when you brush.
Why it happens Calculus (commonly called tartar) is essentially fossilized bacteria. When soft bacterial plaque is not completely removed by daily brushing and flossing, the natural minerals present in your saliva mix with the plaque. Within just 24 to 72 hours, this soft film calcifies and hardens into a stone-like substance that strongly bonds to your tooth enamel.
Clinical Advice
  • Do not attempt to scrape it off at home. Using metal toothpicks or DIY scraping tools will severely scratch your enamel and lacerate your gum tissue, leading to irreversible damage.
  • No amount of aggressive brushing, whitening toothpaste, or mouthwash will remove calculus once it has hardened. It requires professional intervention.
Treatment Note Professional Ultrasonic Scaling to safely vibrate and shatter the calculus off the teeth, followed by root planing and polishing to create a smooth surface that resists new plaque attachment.

Clear the Calculus and Save Your Bone

Calculus is porous, acting like a coral reef that harbors millions of toxic bacteria directly against your gums. The immune system reacts to these toxins by chronically inflaming the gum tissue (gingivitis) and eventually destroying the underlying jawbone (periodontitis) in an attempt to distance itself from the infection. Our periodontal team uses precision ultrasonic instruments to gently and painlessly shatter these hard deposits, instantly removing the source of the infection and allowing your gums to heal and tighten back around your teeth.
