Bruxism teeth grinding and enamel wear clinical representation

Symptom Breakdown

What you feel Waking up with dull, constant headaches, a sore jaw, or fatigued facial muscles. You might notice your teeth becoming visibly shorter, flatter, or chipped. Partners may complain about grinding noises while you sleep. Severe sensitivity to hot and cold often develops as the protective enamel is worn away.
Why it happens Chronic stress, anxiety, sleep disorders (like sleep apnea), or an abnormal bite (malocclusion) trigger unconscious clenching and grinding, often at night. The jaw muscles exert up to 250 pounds of force during bruxism, far exceeding normal chewing pressure.
Clinical Advice
  • Do not ignore morning jaw pain or flattening teeth; enamel does not grow back.
  • Cut back on caffeine and alcohol before bed, as they can significantly exacerbate sleep bruxism.
  • Practice conscious relaxation for your jaw during the day: keep your lips together but your teeth slightly apart.
Treatment Note Custom-fabricated occlusal splints (night guards) to protect the teeth, bite adjustment (equilibration), stress management, or Botox injections to relax overactive masseter muscles.

Stop the Grind, Save Your Enamel

Bruxism acts like sandpaper on your teeth, slowly destroying the enamel, cracking fillings, and fracturing expensive dental work. Over time, it can lead to severe TMJ disorders. By fabricating a custom, perfectly balanced night guard, we can cushion the extreme forces, relax the overworked jaw muscles, and prevent irreversible structural damage.
