What you observe
Following a sudden impact or biting down on something hard, a tooth is either chipped, severely cracked, or completely knocked out of the socket (avulsed) with active bleeding. You may feel a sharp, jagged edge with your tongue, and if the inner nerve is exposed, you will experience excruciating, stabbing pain when breathing in cold air.
Why it happens
Dental trauma typically occurs during sports injuries, falls, or automobile accidents. Teeth can also break spontaneously if they are already structurally weakened by massive old amalgam fillings or deep, untreated decay that has hollowed out the enamel shell.
Critical First Aid
- THE GOLDEN HOUR: For a fully knocked-out adult tooth, you have roughly 30 to 60 minutes to save it.
- Do not scrub the tooth root. Pick it up only by the white crown. Rinse it gently with milk or water (do not wipe it).
- If possible, gently push it back into the socket. If not, keep it completely submerged in a container of cold milk or your own saliva. Do not store it in plain tap water.
Treatment Note
Immediate reimplantation and titanium splinting, emergency root canal therapy for nerve exposure, or immediate dental implants for unsalvageable vertical root fractures.
