What you see & feel
You notice dark brown, purplish, or black patches spreading across your gums, particularly on the front teeth that show when you smile. These patches are completely painless, do not bleed when brushing, and feel exactly like the surrounding pink gum tissue.
Why it happens
In the vast majority of cases, this is simple melanin hyperpigmentation—a natural, genetic accumulation of pigment similar to having freckles on your skin. However, these dark patches can also be heavily triggered or worsened by chronic smoking (known as smoker’s melanosis) or as a side effect of certain systemic medications.
Clinical Advice
- Never attempt to use over-the-counter teeth whitening gels or bleach on your gums. The pigment is inside the tissue, not on the surface. Harsh chemicals will cause severe chemical burns and permanent tissue damage without removing the stains.
- While natural melanin is harmless, any sudden, rapidly changing dark spot should be evaluated to rule out oral melanoma.
