Angular cheilitis cracked corners of mouth lips clinical representation

Symptom Breakdown

What you feel Painful, red, swollen, and cracked sores specifically isolated at one or both corners of your mouth (where the upper and lower lips meet). It hurts sharply to open your mouth wide to eat, yawn, or speak. The cracks may bleed, crust over with a scab, or constantly feel moist and burning.
Why it happens Angular cheilitis is not a cold sore (herpes). It happens when saliva pools at the corners of the mouth, creating a warm, perpetually moist environment. Naturally occurring Candida (fungus) or Staph (bacteria) rapidly multiply in this moisture and infect the skin. It is heavily linked to severe vitamin B/iron deficiencies, chronic lip licking, or poorly fitting dentures causing the facial profile to collapse and fold inward.
Clinical Advice
  • Do not lick the corners of your mouth to soothe the dryness. Standard lip balms will not cure it, and adding more saliva will only feed the fungal infection and make it worse.
  • Avoid picking at the crusty scabs to prevent secondary, deeper bacterial infections from taking hold.
Treatment Note Prescription topical antifungals or antibiotic ointments, nutritional supplements (Vitamin B-complex/Iron), and relining or replacing worn dentures to restore proper facial height.

Heal the Cracks and Stop the Discomfort

Angular cheilitis is notoriously stubborn because every time you open your mouth to eat or speak, the healing skin tears open again. It requires more than just moisturizing. Our clinical team will identify the root cause—whether it is a localized fungal overgrowth, a systemic nutritional deficiency, or a structural dental issue (like worn teeth or old dentures) causing the corners of your mouth to sag and pool saliva. We provide rapid targeted relief and structural solutions to keep the corners of your mouth dry and healthy. Connect with our diagnostic panel in Kharadi.
