What you feel
A slow-growing, completely painless, hard swelling on your jawbone (most commonly in the lower jaw near the wisdom teeth). As it expands over months or years, it can visibly alter your facial symmetry, cause healthy teeth to loosen or shift out of alignment, and occasionally cause a dull ache.
Why it happens
Ameloblastoma is a rare, benign (non-cancerous) tumor of odontogenic origin. It develops from the cells (ameloblasts) that are supposed to form the protective enamel on your teeth during development. Instead of forming a tooth, these cells begin an uncontrolled, aggressive growth pattern that hollows out and destroys the surrounding jawbone like a localized expanding bubble.
