Symptom Breakdown

What you feel As a child's first permanent molars or front teeth erupt (usually around age 6-8), they appear chalky white, yellow, or brown. The teeth may visibly crumble under normal chewing pressure and are extremely sensitive to cold air, brushing, and sweet foods.
Why it happens A systemic disruption during the early years of life (such as frequent high fevers, respiratory problems, or extensive antibiotic use) interrupts the normal hardening (mineralization) of the tooth enamel while it is developing in the jaw.
Clinical Advice
  • Parents: This is NOT caused by poor brushing. The enamel is inherently porous and weak.
  • Use a remineralizing toothpaste and a soft-bristled brush, as brushing can be genuinely painful for the child.
  • Early intervention is critical, as these teeth decay rapidly once they erupt into the mouth.
Treatment Note High-concentration fluoride varnishes, Glass Ionomer (GIC) sealants, Silver Diamine Fluoride (SDF), or pediatric dental crowns to cap and save the crumbling teeth.
